Back in February during a Garden City Board of Education meeting, a pair of gentlemen representing the William Bradford Turner American Legion Post inquired during the citizens comments portion of the meeting about the state of the veterans school tax exemption. They were told that it had been discussed behind closed doors (there had been no public meeting to discuss this), and it was decided that “…the exemption doesn’t do anything for the rest of the community…”although the gentlemen in attendance were repeatedly thanked for their service. Also, it was pointed out that since there had been no “…groundswell from the rest of the community on this issue,” it had not been approved by the board. Now that residents know that a groundswell of attention might be what’s needed to have this veterans school tax exemption passed, be sure to attend the upcoming open school board meeting on May 12 to voice your support. It will be a far better way of expressing your gratitude toward these veterans and how they honorably served our country versus merely saying thank you.
