Biodiversity Research Project

Bio

Biodiversity_060315ARoslyn High School students taking AP Environmental Science this year had an opportunity to take part in a regional biodiversity study, the Bar Code Long Island Initiative. This science research project is offered through the DNA Learning Center of the Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and involves collecting samples from all over the island, testing them for invasive species, and barcoding the species. Roslyn students studied Sunken Meadow Park. The work was done outside of class time and required a strong commitment by the students.

Science teacher Lisa Daniels introduced the project in Roslyn, and has now been offered a fellowship from the Bar Code Long Island Initiative Group. She will be part of an effort to create replicable curriculum and promote the program to other Long Island high schools. For more information about the initiative, go to: http://www.barcodeli.org.
