Raynham Hall Museum, home of Robert Townsend and the Culper Spy Ring, welcomed 300 people for face painting, magic by the Silly Magician, storytelling, lawn games and free ice cream on Memorial Day, immediately following the parade. Families and local Girl Scouts, Cub Scouts and members of the softball and track teams came to the museum’s garden to enjoy the activities.
“We are happy to present a free open house to our community,” said Theresa Skvarla, director of public relations. “People can get to know what Raynham Hall is all about and appreciate the treasure they have in their own backyard.”
Raynham Hall staff and volunteers, wearing their historic costumes, marched in the Oyster Bay Memorial Day parade prior to the day’s festivities.
The free event, which also offered Gooseberry Grove Cart of Ice Cream, was underwritten by museum board members Kay Sato, Barbara Curry and Barbara Adelhardt.
“It was fun to have so many people enjoying our garden and there’s nothing like free ice cream to create a happening,” said Alex Sutherland, the museum’s education director.
