The Oyster Bay-East Norwich Board of Education had their annual reorganization meeting on Tuesday, July 13, and the newly elected board members were introduced and administered their oath of office affirmation. It was the first meeting of the board since the moving up and graduation ceremonies in June.
Ann Marie Longo was unanimously reelected to the position of board president and Jennifer Romeo was unanimously reelected to the vice president seat.
The newly elected board members, trustees Todd Cronin and Laurie Kowalsky, discussed some of the goals that they’d like to see accomplished during their tenure.
Cronin said that he’d like to see students being taught appropriate grade level material in all subjects and that the teachers are making sure that students understand the materials.
“I want teachers to be assured that students understand the course material and that they’re not just teaching towards standardized exams,” said Cronin.
Kowalsky said that she wants to improve upon the fiscal and accounting decision making at the board level and that she would like to see updates in the areas of computer and science courses.
“I would like to see more science instruction in the areas of computer and science and maybe add more computer programming in courses like physics or home and careers,” said Kowalsky.
Vice president Romeo said that she’d like to see the guidance department ensure that kids are life and career ready and also expand upon college choices for graduating seniors.
“Maybe we can look at some different colleges or universities instead of the same ones we have looked at year after year,” said Romeo.
School Superintendent Dr. Laura Seinfeld said that new teachers had been appointed over the summer and that searches were still in progress for additional staff members.
New staff members have been added to the high school’s science department, English department and English as a New Language (ENL).
The next board meeting will be a business meeting to set the tax levy. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, Aug. 4 at 7 p.m.
