Art lovers from Westbury and beyond had the unique opportunity to enjoy strolling in the sun as they searched for specialty, one-of-a-kind items at the Westbury Art Mart on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Everything from handmade art pieces, to handcrafted jewelry and cards, wooden masks, and unique chocolates and teas were available for purchase at the Art Mart located in the Ernesto Strada Piazza at the corner of Post and Maple avenues. It was all to bring the Westbury art community and public together, explained Art Mart event organizer and artist Maureen Baranov, a co-recording secretary with the Greater Westbury Council for the Arts (GWAC), which hosted the event.
“The theme of the Art Mart is all handmade creations,” said Baranov. “I wanted the Arts Council to have a venue where artisans could sell their specialty items to the public.”
Those who turned out couldn’t agree more. “I always go to art shows and am constantly looking for the chance to see and purchase artist’s unique work,” said Ines Tarantelli of Hicksville. “There are so many selections here.”
The community’s children had a chance to get in touch with their inner artists by painting ceramic pieces from “Festivities of Long Island,” a Westbury pottery store. And while patrons perused vending tables searching for the perfect handcrafted treasure, they were entertained by the musical styling of GWAC member and singer Julie Lyon and her Quartet Band.
Westbury Mayor Peter Cavallaro said the event helped fulfill the mission of the Arts Council.
“This is a continuation of the things we are trying to do with the Arts Council bringing events to downtown Westbury,” said Cavallaro.
