Rose Walker (R)

Rose Walker is the 17th District County Legislator, incumbent.

As an educator, mother, grandmother, and now as a county legislator, I have always taken pride in my desire to help people and work with others to make our community better.
A lifelong resident of Hicksville, I am proud to have delivered road and safety improvements throughout my district including West John Street and the recently started project on Jerusalem Avenue, Broadway and Stewart Avenue in Bethpage as well as road improvements in Farmingdale. I look forward to additional projects throughout the district and county.

In our parks system, Cantiague Park has recently completed a major overhaul totaling over $3 million, with a new skating rink, batting cages, ballfields, playground and driving range improvements.

Working together with our fire departments, I have provided funding to the Hicksville Fire Department to upgrade their training facility at Station 3, funding for LED lighting to the Bethpage Fire Department, funding for dispatch office renovations to the Farmingdale Fire Department and I am currently working on a project with the North Massapequa Fire Department. I have also provided funding to the Farmingdale Water District for a generator.

Since taking office in 2010, crime is down over 25 percent, making Nassau County the safest county of its size in the nation.

In my six years in office as a legislator I have worked hard to serve the residents throughout my district and Nassau County.

I look forward to their continued support and look forward to working together toward the betterment of our county.

Daniel Devine (D)

Daniel Devine is running for the 17th District County Legislative seat.

As a lifelong concerned resident of Hicksville, I’m well aware of the history and ongoing issues that affect this populated hamlet. My belief in public service and being a participant in our democracy originates from my teenage years in the Boy Scouts of America. Today, I’m a supporter of Operation STOMP (Save Trees Over More Pavement), a group of concerned citizens whose primary goal is to protect trees along all county roads from being cut down.

After graduating high school, I attended Farmingdale State College and earned a degree in Business Administration. My professional career has involved the roles of technical support and client relations for Long Island’s leaders in the fields of online services and software development.

For the past few years, I’ve participated in conferences held in Washington, DC, and New York City that have focused on civic technology: applications designed to enhance citizen communications, improve government infrastructure and make local government more effective. These annual events are hosted by such good government organizations as the Sunlight Foundation and Personal Democracy Forum and are sponsored by Google and Microsoft.

Each year, hundreds of enthusiastic software developers collaborate to produce this highly anticipated technology. Thus, instead of being entangled in an antiquated, self-serving and corrupt local government, the time has arrived as people can actually interact with a functional digital democracy that indeed works on their behalf. Therefore, in a critical county election in which voters are expected to demand real reform, I’m the candidate best qualified to represent the 17th Legislative District.
