“Never play with matches, be aware of hot surfaces and how to ‘stop, drop and roll’ if your clothing catches fire are just some of the fire safety tips the Massapequa Fire Department taught primary-grade students in the district during Fire Prevention Week.
The firefighters demonstrated the equipment they use when fighting fires and discussed how to prevent fires. They also stressed the importance of having fire alarms and family escape routes in case a fire starts. Students were encouraged to participate in the department’s fire safety poster contest.
Winners will have the opportunity to ride to school on a fire truck. The members of the fire department work with each of the schools every year to deliver these important and life-saving lessons to students. It is hoped that this program encourages families to create a fire safety plan at home.
