The Port Washington community will have the opportunity to admire the artwork of children from the Happy Montessori School at two upcoming events.

For the entire month of November, the cozy café space at Dolphin Bookshop, 299 Main St., will display the creative and original works of children from Happy Montessori, 40 Pleasant Ave. Each classroom created a project around a fall theme, and each child contributed a piece to the project. For example, one classroom painted an oak tree and the children made acorns, while another classroom created leaf prints in bright colors, and yet another made a vine of pumpkins. Lively and enriching conversations grew from these topics, and in addition to enjoying the creative process, the children learned about what they were making. They talked about why leaves change color and how trees and other plants grow from seeds, such as oak trees from acorns. The result is a remarkable show of vitality and color as well as a wonderful learning experience.

In December, the children have another art show at the Children’s Room at the Port Washington Public Library, 1 Library Dr. This will be the last show in the current Children’s Room before the planned renovation. The December art show will cover winter themes and give the children the opportunity to explore different media as well as new topics. The children will also have a field trip to the library to admire their art as well as to learn a little more about how their local library works.

The Happy Montessori School is proud to celebrate its students’ work in this way. The school, which is in its 45th year under the same director, Amrit Sethi, offers many opportunities for children to learn and have fun in a nurturing atmosphere. Events like the art show help the children to see themselves as members of a larger community that is there to support them, but to which they can also contribute in different ways. For example, the children participate in a food and toy drive at this time of year, which is different from sharing art, but which also helps them to see themselves as active members of the world around them. Such activities are integral to the Happy Montessori School’s mission of providing support, predictability, warmth and acceptance in the service of developing confident children who are eager to learn and to engage with the world.
