To give them a real Boy Scout camping experience and to complete certain Cub Scout skill requirements, Troop 71 and Troop 97 jointly hosted a dozen Webelos from Packs 3 and 101 on a camping trip at Christopher Morley Park over the clear, cool weekend of Oct. 17.
The Scouts organized the Webelos into two patrols, hiked up to the campsite with personal and troop gear, pitched tents, performed a flag opening ceremony, ate lunch and then spent the day rotating through Scout-manned stations learning ax and saw safety, fire safety, tying knots and first aid. After a short hike around the park, the group enjoyed fun activities and games before competing in a fire-building contest.
The boys ate hamburgers, hot dogs and chili for dinner and Dutch oven apple crisp dessert cooked over the campfire. The Scouts participated in entertaining skits and songs performed for the adults and leaders. It was lights out to brave the 40-degree night in their tents. A warm breakfast of bacon strips and pancakes the next morning filled them while they packed-up, cleaned the site and held a closing flag ceremony before heading home. All had a great time.
