Lockhart Elementary School second-graders learned the states of matter: solid, liquid, gas, with a little help from a frosty friend. Each second-grade class was given a real snowman that melted away throughout the day in the classroom. Students made observations, measured the water, and made predictions as to what they thought would happen. Some students really enjoyed watching the snowman change and were sad to see him go. Others were excited to write descriptive sentences as he melted before their eyes while another class of students wanted to personalize their snowman, calling him Snow Dude.
Lockhart second-grade teachers Katelyn Mulvey, Meredith O’Pasek and Debbie Cirella said that “The use of snowmen was a fun, relatable and memorable way of delivering this science lesson to students.”
