Gregory Leung, a sixth-grader at Great Neck North Middle School, qualified at the school level to compete in the 2016 New York State National Geographic State Bee, which will be held in Albany on April 1. One winner from each state will advance to the national competition, to be held in Washington, DC, in May.

All North Middle sixth-, seventh-, and eighth-graders first competed in their social studies classes. Each class winner then competed in front of the entire student body to become the school winner. This year’s Geographic Bee coordinator was social studies teacher Fredric Axelrod.

Now in its 28th year, the National Geographic Bee Competition is open to students in grades 4 to 8. Each year, thousands of schools in the United States participate in the National Geographic Bee using materials prepared by the National Geographic Society. The contest is designed to inspire students to be curious about the world.
