Great Neck Public Schools Community Education welcomes a new instructor, Marc Greenberg, who will offer classes on current events, history you should know and the art of slow reading. Greenberg, a retired NYC public school social studies teacher with a passion for reading and history, currently teaches at LIU Post and the 92nd St. Y. The new classes are as follows:
Current Events: The Month in Review
Join lively discussions of the headlines that have most prominently appeared during the previous month. Topics will likely include human rights, the U.S. Constitution, global society, climate, American nation and governance. Classes meet Fridays, April 1, May 6 and June 3, from 10 a.m. to noon. Fee: $85 for Great Neck residents; $95 for nonresidents.
Some History You Ought to Know
It’s been said that we study history so that we won’t repeat the mistakes of the past. Join this forum to gain a greater understanding of historical events/people and how they affect us today. Topics will include Richard Nixon and Woodrow Wilson (April 1); Us Versus Them Mentality (May 6); Famous Trials—ABSCAM, 1981, and Gloria Vanderbilt Custody, 1934 (June 3). Classes meet Fridays, April 1, May 6 and June 3, from 1 to 3 p.m. Fee: $70 for Great Neck residents; $80 for nonresidents.
Middlemarch by George Eliot: A Slow Reading
This serious course is designed to help you slow down and appreciate the art of taking in the sense and beauty of language. George Eliot’s Middlemarch will be used to learn strategies for reclaiming the acoustical properties of written language, to savor it and to enjoy the infinite ways a sentence can unfold. The story is set in the fictitious town of Middlemarch during the early 1800s. Themes include the status of women, the nature of marriage, idealism, self-interest, religion, political reform and education. Classes meet for six, two-hour sessions, from 1 to 3 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays, July 19 and 21, July 26 and 28, and Aug. 2 and 4. Reading assignments will be listed on the registration confirmation. Fee: $160 for Great Neck residents; $170 for nonresidents.
