A 62-year-old man died in a Bay Shore house fire on Thursday evening, Suffolk County police said.

Officers responded to the fire on Grant Avenue in a home that housed multiple families at 10:21 p.m., police said. Brentwood Fire Department firefighters extinguished the flames.

Numerous adults and children escaped but Curley Tutt, who lived in a basement apartment, was killed, police said.

Homicide Section and Arson Section detectives believe the fire may have originated in the basement and a preliminary probe has determined the cause of the fire does not appear to be criminal in nature, but the investigation is continuing.
