To say that Phil Carlucci loves golf is an understatement. Last June, the Massapequa Park resident published Images of America: Long Island Golf, a photo-history book on local golf looking back at public, private and extinct golf courses over 125 years. 
He enlisted the help of fellow resident, George Kirchmann of the Massapequa Historical society, who happens to fill the Observer with interesting, detailed pieces about Massapequa’s past in regular articles.
“George Kirchmann was one of many historians around the Island to help with my research, and with his help I was able to get a photo and brief history of the long-lost Massapequa Hotel golf course into the book (approximate site of today’s All-American Burgers),” said Carlucci. “This will be the first full golf season that the book is available.”
When the European sport of golf found its way to Long Island and took root in the Hamptons at Shinnecock Hills in 1891, its journey across the Atlantic served as the opening drive of a recreational era that now spans three centuries, making Long Island one of the world’s most prominent golf settings.
