Carle Place Crash Leaves Pedestrian Dead

A 65-year-old retired Nassau County police detective from Mineola was fatally hit by a car while crossing a road in Carle Place.

Police said retired Det. Joseph G. Skowronski was walking across Old Country Road when he was hit by an eastbound Nissan Maxima near the corner of Cherry Lane at 3:40 p.m. Thursday.

The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Homicide Squad detectives impounded the car and are continuing the investigation, but the 18-year-old driver of the Nissan was not charged.
