Next week, Schreiber Assistant Principal Julie Torres is being honored by the Long Island Hispanic Chamber of Commerce as an Educational Advocate at their 11th Annual Latina Hat Luncheon at Belmont Racetrack on Friday, May 20, at 11 a.m. in the Turf & Field Room.
Torres is an experienced educator with over 20 years of experience in education, specifically in the area of urban education, bilingual education and educational leadership.
“I have worked at Schreiber for the past 10 years, and served as the assistant principal for the graduating classes of 2010, 2014 and currently the class of 2018,” said Torres. “I am very honored to receive this award. I have dedicated my professional career to doing what is best for students, so it feels rewarding to be recognized for my work.”
In addition to being an assistant principal at Schreiber, Torres also serves as education chair on the board of trustees for the New Heights Academy Charter School in Washington Heights, New York. Previously, Torres worked for the New York City Board of Education for 12 years. She began her career as a bilingual science teacher at Theodore Roosevelt High School in the Bronx, where she taught biology, chemistry, environmental science and general science. After earning her school building administrator license, she became assistant principal of supervision in science at the High School for Media and Communications at the George Washington Educational Campus in Washington Heights.
Torres earned a BA from Barnard College, Columbia University, and an MA from Teachers College, Columbia University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in education leadership at the University of Pennsylvania.
