Several students from the Manhasset High School Hellenic Club traveled to New York City to march in the Greek Independence Day Parade. This year’s parade commemorated the 195th anniversary of Greek independence. Representatives from the United States government, the republic of Greece, New York City police and fire departments, the U.S. Marine Corps, along with over 500 schools and organizations, gathered on Fifth Avenue to march.
Members of the presidential guard of the Republic of Greece, known as Evzones, opened the parade to cheering crowds that filled the streets between 63rd and 79th Streets. The Manhasset High School Hellenic Club carried a banner and for the very first time participated in the parade which celebrated Hellenic culture, heritage and tradition.
Several high schools and college clubs from New York, New Jersey and Connecticut joined the march and Manhasset students felt the pride and excitement as spectators applauded their efforts to promote awareness of Hellenic traditions. One student commented, “I am so happy that I came. Next year I will make sure to bring more friends to the Greek Parade.”
