Kiwanians from Manhasset and Port Washington came together for their bimonthly meeting at the Port Washington Yacht Club on Thursday, May 12. Special guests included Nathan R. Savage of the Salvation Army. The Salvation Army was the recipient of money raised from the ringing of the bells during the past holiday season. Kiwanis President Jeffrey Stone presented a check for $3,0000 to Savage during the meeting.
Stone also made a presentation to fellow Kiwanian Selwyn “Jerry” Rudnick who will be named Senior of the Year by the Town of North Hempstead this week on Thursday, May 19, at Harbor Links. Rudnick is a very active member of Kiwanis International and has held several positions in the organization. He was integral in starting up many new clubs throughout New York and Long Island, the most recent being Floral Park.
The guest speaker during the luncheon was State Senator Jack Martins. Martins is running for the state assembly position currently being held by Steve Israel. Some of the issues Martins touched upon were the multi-billion dollar income tax cuts included in this year’s state budget, workforce development, environmental protection. He discussed the $6 million he and Michelle Schimel worked to secure for an island-wide groundwater study to help protect Long Island’s drinking water, and the state aid increase for local schools.
Upcoming events include 54th Annual Long Island North Kiwanis Youth Awards celebration on May 23, the 1st Annual Eleanor Lalena Memorial Golf Classic on July 18 at North Shore Country Club in Glen Head and an upcoming Governor’s Dinner on Aug. 4.
