The Sixth Annual Don Scott Memorial 5K took place on Sunday, May 15, under beautiful sunny skies and a brisk wind, which made it the perfect setting for the race.
Runners gathered in Mary Jane Davies Green on Plandome Road starting at about 8 a.m. All participants received a fabulous T-shirt, water and snacks. Volunteers from the Manhasset track and field and cross country teams helped check-in runners.
Don Scott’s family was on hand along with numerous supporters to pay tribute to the late Don Scott, a Manhasset High School biology teacher and beloved track coach for 42 years. This run, which started six years after his death, is a testament to his impact on the community. The foundation is dedicated to colon cancer research initiatives, public awareness, screening and outreach as well as an annual student scholarship.
Many students from Manhasset High School track and field and cross country and members of the community participated in the race. Many Manhasset High School graduates returned to participate in the event like David Knowles, who was the overall winner and established a new course record of 15:56.525. Lena Edelstein, also a former track star, came in first in the women’s overall with a time of 19:08.871.
What was truly inspirational was the camaraderie of the spectators as the runners passed, rooting them on. Neighbors stood by cheering and giving high-fives as the racers made their way to the finish line. At the end, all gathered at the award ceremony to enjoy some well-deserved fruit and bagels.
