Wantagh Fire Department Ex-Captain Stephen J. Minogue was recently honored by Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano when he was awarded the 2016 Firematic Service Award.
Minogue has been a member of the Wantagh Fire Department for 41 years. He followed in the footsteps of his father, ex-chief Mike Minogue, when he joined the department on Dec. 30, 1974, and was assigned to Engine 2. Minogue, or “Stick” as he is affectionately known, served for a total of three years as lieutenant from 1978-80 and six years as captain from 1980-84 and again from 2007-10. One of his most cherished memories is that he served as captain for the two years that his father was chief of the department.

In addition, Minogue has served two terms as vice-president from 1998-2000 and 2012-13 and president from 2000-02 and again from 2013-15 of Wantagh Volunteer Fire Company no. 2. He remains a very active member of the department and company.

Minogue can always be counted on for his knowledge, experience and sound judgment. He has mentored countless new members of the department and has served on the Department’s prestigious training committee for approximately 36 years, including 14 years as chairman. The training committee is one of the most crucial jobs due to the importance of not only training new and current members, but also keeping up with advances and changes in national, state and local policy and procedures to help maintain the high standards and traditions of the department. As a longtime member of Engine 2, he served on committees responsible for the design of the last two engines that were assigned as Engine 2.

Minogue has received many awards, including an award for operating at a fire involving an overturned leaking propane tanker, which created a high risk of injury to fire department personnel, two unit citations and a Wantagh Fire Department chief’s award for his many years of excellence and commitment to the training committee.

He has been married to his wife, Kristine, for 26 years and is the father of Connor and Courtney. He has four brothers; Michael, Christopher, Timothy and Matthew and one sister, Corrine. In addition to his commitment to the Wantagh Fire Department, Minogue is active in his church and has coached CYO basketball for many years.

The Wantagh Fire Department congratulates ex-captain Minogue for being awarded the Nassau County Firematic Service Award for his more than 41 years of dedication, service and commitment to excellence for the benefit of the residents of his community and his department.
