Pack 7 recently held its annual Pinewood Derby Race. This is the most attended event in the scouting calendar. This event is an exercise in parent/child bonding as the design and actual creation of the car is a collaborative effort of both parent and scout. More than 60 cars were carved, shaped, sanded and painted by the scouts and were proudly on display prior to race time.
There was an authentic track, digital timekeeper and instant video replay for all heats. Each car had the opportunity to race on each individual track and the average speed calculated into the overall finish place.
The scouts and their families all stood on the sidelines, cheered and rooted for each other during every race heat. After all the racing, while the scores were being tallied, the crowd was treated to some jokes, courtesy of the scouts and the leaders.
A quiet hush came over the crowd as the winners in each category were announced. The winner came up to collect his trophy and lay claim to his winning car. Awards were given for the fastest car in each Cub Scout level as well as the overall favorite design. The winners were cheered by their fellow scouts and a lesson in sportsmanship was learned by all who were present.
Pack 7 is open to all boys in grades 1 to 5. It offers time for parent-child bonding while sharing unique fun adventures together and teaches life skills with laughter and fun. For more information, please contact Cub master Dave Phillips at davephil@optonline.net.
