Movie: Trumbo
The Massapequa Bar Harbour auditorium will show a 1:30 and 6:30 p.m. screening of the movie Trumbo. In 1947, Dalton Trumbo (Bryan Cranston) was Hollywood’s top screenwriter until he and other artists were jailed and blacklisted for their political beliefs. Trumbo recounts how Dalton used words and wit to win two Academy Awards and expose the absurdity and injustice of the blacklist, which entangled everyone from gossip columnist Hedda Hopper (Helen Mirren) to John Wayne, Kirk Douglas and Otto Preminger. Starring Bryan Cranston, Helen Mirren and Diane Lane (2015; R, 2 hrs).

Safe Boating for All Ages
Join Ron Stehn for this free, six-week class that qualifies you for your safe boating certificate, which is required for operation of personal watercraft. Only one absence permitted. A written examination concludes the course. This course is open to all ages and all materials are provided. Also on July 14. From 6:45 to 8:45 p.m. in the Bar Harbour meeting room.

Probate Traps and Medicaid Tips
Probate Traps and Medicaid Tips with Attorney Chris Petillo. This program will focus on how assets are titled; what may cause a will to be probated; and tips on how to avoid probate. Also discussed will be protecting the equity in your home, Medicaid eligibility rules, and the use of irrevocable trusts versus revocable trusts. The program will be held as an open forum and attendees are welcome to bring their own questions. At 1:30 p.m. in the Central Avenue meeting room.

Contemporary Book Club
Come discuss Heroes to the End by Jim Smith and meet the author after the book discussion. From 12:30 to 4 p.m. in the Bar Harbour children’s room

Ice Cream Sundae/Root Beer Float Party
Come in and create your own ice cream sundae using an assortment of great toppings and enjoy a root beer float as well. There will also be a demonstration on how to make ice cream. For grades 6-12. From 7 to 8 p.m. in the Plainedge Public Library community room.

AARP Defensive Driving
Come reduce your insurance with a defensive driving course from 9:15 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Bar Harbour auditorium. Fee is $20 for AARP members; $25 for nonmembers. Payment is by check or money order made out to AARP. A separate check must be submitted for each person taking the class. Class size is limited. Register at the RefMassCal_070616Derence Desk.

Book Buddies Teen Training
Interested in participating in the Book Buddies Under the Stars program, going on Wednesdays this July? If you haven’t taken this training class before, you must take it in order to participate in Book Buddies. A training session will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at Central Avenue. Book Buddies will be on Wednesday July 13, 20 and 27, from 7 to 7:45 p.m. on the Central Avenue patio. Community service will be awarded for every night attended.

Massapequa’s Historic Treasures
Watch history come alive as Bill Colfer and George Kirchmann of the Massapequa Historical Society talk about the buildings of our local Historic Complex. Learn about Old Grace Church (built in 1844), the Delancey Floyd Jones Library (built in 1896), and the Elbert Floyd Servant’s Cottage (built around 1870). Most importantly, learn what Massapequa was like back in olden times. The lecture will take place at the Bar Harbour Library at 6:30 p.m.

Concert Under The Stars
The library will present a free concert under the starMassCal_062916Cs at Brady Park at 8 p.m. Performances include top songs from the biggest artists of the ‘60s to today, including Billy Joel, Whitney Houston, Styx, Donna Summer and Stevie Nicks. You never know what you’ll hear from The Steel Silk Band. Bring your lawn chairs and enjoy this show.

The Late Movie: Star War s: The Force Awakens
In this thrilling continuation of the epic space opera, ex-stormtrooper Finn (John Boyega), scrappy desert dweller Rey (Daisy Ridley), and droid companion BB-8 get caught up in a galactic war when they come across a map containing the whereabouts of the vanished Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). They soon embark on an epic adventure that brings them face-to-face with heroes from the past, as well as new villains. From 6:30 to 9 p.m. in the Central Avenue children’s room.
