The Salvation Army in New Cassel will be getting a complete remodel, allowing them to continue serving the local community with a variety of programs and outreaches.
The building at 992 Prospect Ave. in New Cassel was recently approved by the Town of North Hempstead for a complete redevelopment. The existing building will be razed, to make way for a new multi-million dollar 20,000-square-foot facility.
“The existing building they currently operate out of no longer suits their needs,” said John Farrell, a partner with Sahn Ward Coschignano, PLLC, who along with Chris Coschignano, represented The Salvation Army and helped them get the necessary variances and site plan approvals. “This new three story state-of-the-art facility will allow them to serve the needs of the community better.”
The Salvation Army currently operates after-school, music and dance programs, Bible studies and church services at the site. A new facility became necessary following the growth of its ministry and after-school programs.
Residents around the building had initially voiced opposition to the project, citing potential traffic and parking concerns. Farrell said that they made minor modifications to the plans to keep traffic away from the residential community and out towards Prospect Avenue and a parking license agreement was also made with the Seventh-day Adventist Church across the street to use their parking lot on Sunday.
“Parking in that area is difficult on the weekends because of the number of churches in the area,” Farrell said. “The Seventh-day Advent services are on Saturday, and the Salvation Army services are on Sunday, so they can share the lot.”
