Leisure Club News

Leisure Club members recently enjoyed a variety of special programs. There were several guest speakers who introduced vastly different topics, a party, a terrific entertainment program, a bus trip, a dinner theater show and a farewell luncheon. In addition, the regular weekly meeting had some surprises in store for club members.

LeisureClub__AOn separate occasions three very different subjects were presented to the group. Dr. John Stamatos of Syosset Hospital covered the various intricacies of pain management and advised the group of all the help that is available to assist one who is having great difficulty living with pain. On another subject of interest to seniors, County Executive Ed Mangano introduced some up to date information regarding progress in the county. He spoke of the many programs and opportunities available for residents and perhaps, most importantly, the fact that with all this progress, there has been no tax increase. A third speaker from Roslyn Savings Bank made club members aware of current bank scams that can defraud people of their money. He also apprised the group of the different bank services available and the safe bank offers for investments. Though vastly different, these three speakers brought new insights into a medical problem, the state of affairs in the county and money management.

Another special weekly meeting occurred when the “Aloha” dancers took to the stage and performed graceful, beautiful Hawaiian dances. The fun continued as the girls were able to coax club members to participate. A surprise serving of pizza topped off the fun afternoon. During other weekly meetings business was conducted, birthdays and anniversaries were celebrated, and bingo, 50/50 drawings and duck races were held. A day trip also bought seniors to Bethlehem for a day at the Sands Casino and Westbury Manor was the venue for a dinner show that included the production of the musical Camelot.

Almost 100 seniors also attended the end of the year luncheon, held at Westbury Manor. This year found a new musician, Chris Poje, who was a big hit with his fabulous rendition of musical favorites. With the beautiful ambiance of the Manor, the delicious food and terrific music, it was a perfect ending for the 2015-16 Leisure Club year.

During the luncheon Mayor Scott Strauss also swore in the new officers for the coming year: President Mike Coniglio, vice president John Murray, recording secretary Kathy Murray, corresponding secretary Ginny Leonhard and treasurer Bart Lowenthal. The mayor also presented a certificate of appreciation, plus heartfelt thanks for all of the work of the retiring board members: Loretta Baughan, treasurer; Nora Coniglio, vice-president; and Mary Creegan, recording secretary.

With such an energetic team, the coming year should prove to be a banner one for the Leisure Club of Mineola. The next meeting of the club is Tuesday, Sept. 13.
