St. John Of Jerusalem Chapel Undergoes Construction

St. John of Jerusalem Chapel has been standing proudly at 500StJohns_082416A Wantagh Ave., Levittown for the past 160 years. On Friday Aug. 19, it began the process of getting a facelift.

The chapel is the second-oldest church structure remaining in Wantagh and the surrounding communities. It is one of the few buildings still remaining from a time in which the Wantagh area was known as Jerusalem.

Built circa 1865, the building was originally the home of the German Methodist-Eposcopal Mission. Today, it remains virtually unchanged and stands amid the markers and greenery of a still operating graveyard known as the St. John of Jerusalem Cemetery.

Veteran Robert Wiebold, along with several other volunteers, have helStJohns_082416Dped restore the church for the past 15 years. With the beginning construction of a newly restored roof, the chapel will eventually be turned into a historical museum.
