Playoff Aspirations For Mustangs

As he heads into his 30th year of coaching Mineola football, head coach Dan Guido has one goal in mind.

“We’re looking to do better than last year,” Guido said. “We’re looking to get into the playoffs.”

Football__BAfter making it to the conference championships in 2014, the Mustangs had a lackluster 2015 season, finishing 4-4 in the conference and missing a chance at the playoffs. With a slew of returning players this year, Guido said he hopes the team will have the edge it needs to once again secure a spot in the playoffs.

“We have so much experience. We have guys who played last year and that’s going to help us a lot,” Guido said. “Our experience will be our strength.”

With the loss of several graduating seniors and addition of new members moving up from JV, the coaches are now focusing their efforts on finding where everyone fits on the field.

“Our job is trying to get the guys to learn their positions and more than one position, because we’re not sure where everyone is fitting into the puzzle just yet,” said assistant coach Helmes Bohringer, adding that that meant more time in the weight room and video room, showing athletes how to play different positions.

He called out Sebastian Domenech, Nick Natale and Quinn Revelant as some of the players to watch in the upcoming season.

The Mustangs’ season opener is an away game Saturday, Sept. 10, at 2 p.m. against West Hempstead High School.
