Port Overpass Demolition This Weekend September 9

Demolition to Begin on Long Island Rail Road’s South Bayles Avenue Pedestrian OverpassLIRRLogo

Demolition of the MTA Long Island Rail Road’s now-closed South Bayles Avenue pedestrian overpass, at the LIRR Port Washington Station, will take place this weekend, starting Friday night, September 9 and continuing throughout the day on Saturday, September 10.  On June 29, LIRR closed a portion of the overpass on South Bayles Avenue after a scheduled inspection deemed a section of the bridge, which was built in 1959, to be unsafe.

Starting Friday morning September 9, Platform B (Tracks 4 and 5) will no longer be accessible from the overpass leading to/from the Haven Avenue parking lot.  Customers who need to access those tracks must walk to the station plaza.  Access from the Haven Avenue parking lot to Platform A (Tracks 2 and 3) remains unaffected.

In order to accommodate the crane and other equipment required to accomplish the demolition work, part of the South Bayles Avenue parking lot will be closed for 24 hours, beginning at 8 p.m. on Friday night, September 9 and ending at 8 p.m. on Saturday night, September 10. All cars must be removed from the lot by 8 p.m. on Friday. Demolition will be completed Saturday night, and the parking lot will be restored for customer use by Sunday morning.

Installation of a new prefabricated pedestrian bridge is tentatively scheduled for mid to late October.
