Girl Scout Juniors Troop 521 recently completed their Girl Scout Bronze Award project. The Girl Scouts participating in the project were Cristina Caputi, Madeleine Chun, Xiomara Diaz, Chloe Malary, Katie O’Sullivan, Pari Shah and Sara Strassberg. The Scouts focused on community education. The girls were inspired through their love of art and history.

Specifically, they gave the public a historical appreciation of the Manhasset Schenck House c.1765 and the Manhasset District #6 School House c.1845. Both of these buildings were formerly located in Manhasset and are now open to the public at Old Bethpage Village Restoration.

The Scouts conducted much research and learned how to navigate the Manhasset Public Library. They researched the Schenck family, Colonial Dutch American Architecture, a child’s typical school day, and children’s clothing and entertainment during that time period. The girls made detailed fliers for the public which they presented and distributed at the Manhasset Public Library on several days. The Manhasset Public Library has graciously kept these beautifully illustrated booklets for the community for future reference.

The Girl Scouts later toured the buildings at Old Bethpage Village Restoration and made “string doll” crafts typical to that time period. The work on the award helped the girls learn how to work as a team and develop an appreciation for their town.
