Hempstead Fatal Hit-and-run Suspect Arrested

A driver was arrested for fleeing the scene after hitting a 60-year-old man who died after being struck by two vehicles in Hempstead on Thursday morning, Nassau County police said.

Jose Nelson Cruz, 29, of Amityville, was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal crash and driving without a license.

The victim, Miguel Vasquez Guillen, was running across Washington Street at the corner of Burr Avenue when he was hit by a southbound Jeep that stopped and was then hit again by a southbound Dodge Sprint that fled shortly after 7 a.m., police said.

Cruz, who was driving the Dodge, was arrested after he crashed into a tree and Long Island Rail Road fencing shortly later, police said.

Cruz will be arraigned Friday at First District Court in Hempstead.
