Signs On Government Property

ltrminogue_110216aThe photos shown were taken on Saturday, Oct. 29, at “Deadman’s Curve,” a dangerous curve on Bayview Avenue along Manhasset Bay.

Candidates and campaign staff members were asked numerous times over the past few weeks to remove signs from this location due to safety concerns (notice guardrail in photo). Some candidates removed their signs and some did not. The signs were placed on government property and governments generally do not endorse candidates.

Some campaign signs from previous elections are seen along the shore of the bay at Deadman’s Curve (see photos) and makes one wonder how many signs made it into the water and floated up Manhasset Bay and landed on the shore of one of the Plandomes or Great Neck.

ltrminogue_110216bCampaign signs were placed on the fence of Whitney Pond Park, a town of North Hempstead park located at the intersection of Community Drive and Northern Boulevard in Manhasset. One call to a person identifying himself as the treasurer of a judge’s campaign did not result in the removal of the campaign sign until the town took it down. The town removed the signs, but additional signs were attached. Once again, the town removed the signs—at a cost to taxpayers. Should voters question the integrity of candidates placing signs on government property?
