Prostate cancer is the second-leading cause of cancer deaths in men in the United States with the American Cancer Society predicting more than 26,000 deaths from this disease in 2016.
The day I was diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, I realized I had no knowledge of this prevalent and possibly deadly form of cancer. I also realized that men of my age had virtually no information about this disease. Soon thereafter, I formed Ed Randall’s Fans for the Cure, a nonprofit charity whose sole mission is to provide prostate cancer awareness, education and medical programs to men 45 and older.
On Feb. 23, Fans For the Cure will be celebrating its second gala to support our programs for the coming year and beyond. We are excited that our presence in 2017 will extend to events organized in communities that bring heightened awareness to African-American and Afro-Caribbean men, among whom death rates range from two to four times higher than any other group. This outreach will compliment our 11th Annual Baseball Road Trip, on which we expect to conduct awareness campaigns, community seminars with our doctors and free PSA screenings at dozens of Major League and Minor League baseball games. (Our doctors, staff and volunteers successfully staffed more than 100 games around the country in 2016.)
Join us by buying a table and attending our gala in February. If you cannot attend, please consider contributing a table or individual seats so that we can invite prostate cancer survivors, veterans of the military and their families to join us on this special evening. We will be honoring former Giants football great Harry Carson, Rawlings Executive Mike Thompson and Dr. Charles G. Drake, new director of genitourinary oncology at New York Presbyterian/Columbia University Medical Center and a tireless champion in the fight against prostate cancer in his years at Johns Hopkins.
Please email me today at edrandall@fans4thecure.org to find out more about how you can help, or visit our website at www.fans4thecure.org to purchase tickets to the Feb. 23 gala.
Thank you and together we will accomplish this life-changing mission.
