Great things come in small packages, and that certainly seems to be the case with the island of Nantucket. Though only 47.8 square miles, the island packs in plenty to delight, with pristine beaches, art galleries, restaurants, historical sites and more. For visitors planning a short stay, it’s hard to decide what to prioritize but here’s a few of our must-do items for a trip to Nantucket.
1. Visit a lighthouse
Nantucket has three lighthouses, all distinct and with their own history. Welcoming visitors who arrive by ferry to the island is the wooden Brant Point Lighthouse, which was first erected in 1746, making it America’s second oldest lighthouse. Those who visit the red-and-white Sankaty Head Lighthouse, which was built in 1850, are treated to a gorgeous view of the Atlantic Ocean and while it’s a bit out of the way, Great Point Light is called one of the best spots on the island.
2. Browse the Nantucket Whaling Museum
The Nantucket Whaling Museum highlights the area’s past as the “Whaling Capitol of the World.” Highlights at the museum, which overlooks Nantucket Harbor, include a 46-foot sperm whale skeleton and restored 1847 candle factory. For more information, visit www.nha.org/sites.
3. Grab a drink

4. Catch a sunset
Madaket Beach is beloved not only for its ample space and great waves, but visitors rave about the beautiful sunset views. Take in the beauty from the beach, or with a drink and dinner at Millie’s restaurant, which is just a few minutes away.
5. Take in a show
