The Great Neck Library Board of Trustees unanimously voted to authorize the April 28 termination of Executive Library Director Kathy Giotsas at a special Board of Trustees meeting that lasted only three minutes at the Main Library on Monday, May 1. Assistant Director Tracy Geiser assumed the position of interim director of the Great Neck Library effective May 1.
When asked why Giotsas was terminated after holding the position for less than two years, Holly Coscetta, Great Neck Library administrative coordinator, said, “The library does not comment on personnel and staff issues.”
Geiser has been the assistant director for the past year. “The Great Neck Library is extremely fortunate to have hired talented individuals in all areas of library services—programming, youth services and administration,” said Francine Krupski, chair of the Director Search Committee. “In her new role, Ms. Geiser will oversee the day-to-day operations of the Great Neck Library.”
Library President Robert Schaufeld added, “We have been and continue to be impressed with Ms. Geiser’s abilities over this past year—from her first day of hire to present, she has proven herself to be a leader and great asset.”
As interim director, Geiser’s immediate tasks will be to resolve open items surrounding the renovation of the Main Library building, which remain outstanding since the building’s reopening on Oct. 30, 2016. “Her list of tasks will begin with the completion of reshelving of our book and media collections; delivery of all Great Neck Library possessions stored off-site for the past three years; delivery and installation of additional shelving; complete return of all art owned by the Great Neck Library; and other open items,” reported the library in a statement. “We are confident that Ms. Geiser, together with the Board of Trustees and staff, will swiftly and successfully accomplish these challenges.”
