A Westbury fifth-grader was able to escape a man who grabbed her while she was walking to school yesterday.
According to Nassau County police, while at the corner of Grand Street and Winthrop Avenue at 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday, June 21, a female fifth grade student ( age 10) walking to Drexel Avenue Elementary School, was approached from behind by an unknown white male in his 30’s, who grabbed her arm. The fifth grader was able to break free from the subject, ran and hid from him until he fled the scene. The uninjured girl then ran to school and reported the incident.
The subject, who never stated a word to the victim, was further described as being heavy set, wearing an orange T-shirt, shorts and work boots. He was last seen heading eastbound on Winthrop Avenue towards Post Avenue.
In a statement put out by the Westbury School District, Superintendent Eudes Budhai said administration is working very closely with local law enforcement, and has provided video surveillance tapes in support of identifying and capturing the individual in question. A security guard from the district also drove around the area after the incident, but found no one.
