Port Washington residents voted “yes” to pass the Port Washington Union Free School District 2018-19 year budget totaling $155,938,460 on May 15. The budget was approved 1,807 votes to 449 with a margin acceptance of 80 percent.
“I would just like to thank the community for their overwhelming endorsement of this budget and their support of our school district,” said President of the Board of Education Karen Sloan. “It’s incredible. I believe Ms. Callahan said 80 percent. That’s the highest we’ve ever had. It’s very telling that it shows the hard work of coming together with the community and the school district and putting up a budget everybody could really get behind. I thank you.”
Along with the passing of the school budgets all three unopposed incumbent trustees were reelected. Trustee and current vice president Nora Johnson received 1,653 votes, trustee Larry Greenstein received 1,536 votes and trustee Elizabeth Weisburd received 1,565 votes. There were 189 write-ins.
The district released a statement, stating, “Thank you to all of the residents who participated in the 2018-19 school district budget vote and trustee election. With this support, the district will continue to provide a full academic and co-curricular program while also funding important instructional and instructional support positions to accommodate our student population.”
