The annual reorganization meeting for the Manhasset Board of Education (BOE) marked the first meeting of the 2018-19 school year. This meeting evaluates the shortcomings and successes of the past year and refocuses its objectives for the 2018-19 year. The newly elected board members are sworn in, nominations are taken for the office of president and vice president and additional appointments are made.
The newly elected board members were Ann-Marie Curd and Carlo Prinzo, who both ran unopposed in May. Regina Rule was elected president and Ann Marie Curd was elected vice-president. Dr. Vincent Butera was appointed as superintendent; Christine Michelen was appointed district clerk; Brian Lonegan was appointed district treasurer; Rosemary Johnson was appointed as assistant treasurer; Sherrie Goldstein was appointed claims auditor; and Paul Baungarten was appointed to the Audit Committee.
The 2017-18 school year ended with many issues to consider in light of the recent survey that was done by K12.
After the reorganization meeting, the BOE conducted a workshop to discuss goals for the upcoming year. Some of the overall concerns were health and wellness, safety, substance abuse and a 21st-century curriculum.
“A priority for the upcoming year will be to continue to strengthen the systems and supports in place to address the academic, social and emotional needs of our students,“ said Dr. Butera. “The survey results did shine light on some feelings amongst our students that we must address. We are also looking to continue to design and enhance our environment to ensure that it supports the academic, social and emotional needs of our students.”
While no specific goals were created, the board is working to finalize their priorities for the 2018-19 year.
