International Competitions Seek Participants

SportsMaccabiahAMaccabi USA is seeking Jewish athletes, coaches and volunteers to represent the United States in the 2019 Regional Maccabi Games.

The 14th Pan American Maccabi Games will be held in Mexico City, Mexico, from July 5 to 15, 2019, and the 15th European Maccabi Games will be held in Budapest, Hungary, from July 29 to Aug. 7, 2019.

Both Games will be conducted in cooperation with Maccabi World Union and are held every four years, two years after the Maccabiah is held. The 2017 Maccabiah Games were held last summer and brought together 10,000 athletes—including 17 from Great Neck—making it the third-largest international sporting event in the world, where enthusiasts competed on behalf of 85 countries in 45 sports.

The Pan American and European Games are a high-level sports competition for Jewish athletes from all over the world, aimed at connecting Jews from the diaspora, and will be hosted by the European Maccabi Confederation and the Confederacion Latinoamericana Maccabi (CLAM).

Tonja Magerman, Team USA chair of the 2019 Pan American Maccabi Games Organizing Committee, and Debbie Adams, Team USA Chair of the 2019 European Maccabi Games Organizing Committee, are recruiting volunteers to serve as sports chairs on their respective committees to help recruit qualified athletes and coaches. The Organizing Committee will field two individual USA Teams of approximately 700 participants.

“The 2019 Regional Games provide individuals a unique opportunity to represent Team USA,” said Shane Carr, Maccabi USA program director. “There is an indescribable feeling
of pride as you march in with the delegation wearing red, white and blue. Together we will make lifelong memories alongside our Jewish counterparts from around the world, who share a common love for sports.”
