Farmingdale’s newest school opens
While summer is a time for winding down and taking things one day at a time after nearly 10 full months of school in session, Journey Prep School in Farmingdale did anything but slow down. After moving from Commack, administration, faculty and custodial staff were hard at work all summer long to prepare Journey Prep for its first school year in the St. Kilian’s building.
Now, with the school year a month underway, Head of School Monje Moore said things have been “marvelous,” as both students and staff are experiencing the school for the first time in its new location.
Formerly named Sappo School, the school originated in 1993 as a place where struggling students could discover their strengths and receive a more individualized education to help them succeed. With a total student body of about 100 students, the school features class sizes of no more than 15 students, providing a setting where students and teachers develop a close relationship and each student can learn at the speed and the level they are most comfortable with.
Students who need specialized instruction may receive three periods of reading a day as part of the school’s full-day schedule, or they may come to Journey from their school district specifically for the three-period program. Students hail from 24 different school districts and countries including China, Japan and India.
“Our goal is to help those children with any issues or problems that they may have, but also to identify their strengths and to focus on their strengths,” said President Steve Souhrada. “What we try to do is make sure our teachers are very attuned to each and every student in the room.”
Students receive an education aligning with New York State’s requirements. The school also teaches social skills “so kids can learn and be their best selves,” explained Moore. They start their day with a moment of meditation and peer circles are held once a week to address any thoughts, feelings or conflicts students may have.
