The month of October brings us Columbus Day, Halloween and color changing leaves. It also marks the roll out of new movies including ones that are thought to be award contenders. When life gets too hectic, head to one of these new debuts for a few hours of relaxation. The following are just a few for you to choose from.
A Star Is Born (R)
Oct. 5, sees the much anticipated premiere of A Star is Born with Bradley Cooper in his directorial debut. Cooper also stars in the film and was the cowriter of the screenplay. He stars opposite Lady Gaga, Andrew Dice Clay, David Chappelle and Sam Elliot in the third remake of this classic musical mainly known for the casting of Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson. Cooper and Gaga own these roles and Oscar buzz is already making noise. The romantic musical drama follows a country musician alcoholic who discovers a young singer with whom he falls in love with. A must-see.
First Man (PG-13)
On Oct. 12, First Man debuts, also with a lot of award talk early in the season. Directed by Damien Chazelle, the film stars Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke and Kyle Chandler. Based on a true story, Gosling portrays Neil Armstrong and follows his remarkable journey that led him to become the first man to walk on the moon. An extraordinary talented cast propels this film into excellence.
Bad Times at the El Royale (NR)
Also on Oct. 12, comes Bad Times at the El Royale, which is directed and written by Drew Goddard and stars Jeff Bridges, Cynthia Erivo, Dakota Johnson, John Hamm, Chris Hemsworth and Cailee Spaeny. This thriller is about seven strangers, each with their own dark past, which all come to light at once while staying one night at a shady motel. A very intriguing movie with a lot of twists and turns.
Serenity (NR)
The drama-thriller Serenity hits theaters on Oct. 19. Steven Knight directs an all-star cast including Anne Hathaway, Matthew McConaughey, Diane Lane and Jason Clarke. McConaughey plays a fishing boat captain with a shadowy past that re-emerges with the sudden reappearance of his estranged wife who is desperate for his help. This film will keep you on the edge of your seat and keep you guessing what is really going on.
Hunter Killer (R)
On Oct. 26, Hunter Killer debuts, directed by Donovan Marsh and stars Linda Cardellini, Gerard Butler, Common and Gary Oldman. Based on the 2012 novel Firing Point, written by Don Keith and George Wallace, this thriller involves a new American captain of a submarine that is thrust into action joining the U.S. Naval Seals in a rescue attempt of the Russian president who has been taken by a rogue general. This movie is action packed and Gerard Butler is terrific in a role well-suited for him.
