The dog days of summer are upon us and the temperatures are just beginning to rise. Stores are already preparing for back to school and, dare I say, Halloween. But hold up, for there are 31 days in August for us to go to the beach, pools, outdoor concerts and of course, the movies. The following are just a few films for you to choose from.
Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw (PG-13)
Aug. 2 sees Fast & The Furious Presents: Hobbs and Shaw racing into theaters, directed by David Leitch and starring Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Idris Elba, Vanessa Kirby and Helen Mirren. A spin-off of the ever popular The Fast and the Furious franchise, this story follows Hobbs (Johnson) and Shaw (Statham) attempting to put their hatred for one another aside so they can team up to stop a new threat from a cyber-genetically heightened terrorist, who, with his deadly virus, intends to destroy all of humanity. Johnson and Statham have unbelievable chemistry and this movie will have you cringing and laughing out loud at the same time.
The Kitchen (R)
On Aug. 9, The Kitchen debuts, directed by Andrea Berloff in her directorial debut. The films stars Elisabeth Moss, Melissa McCarthy, Tiffany Haddish and Domhnall Gleeson. This movie is based on a comic book series of the same name written by Ollie Masters and Ming Doyle. Fresh off her 2019 nomination for Can You Ever Forgive Me?, McCarthy once again proves she can do it all and is not limited to comedic roles. After their Irish gangster husbands get arrested, the wives decide they can keep up the business and their lifestyles. A must-see.
Brian Banks (PG-13)
Also, on Aug. 9, Brian Banks rushes into theaters. Directed by Tom Shadyac, the film stars Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear and Sherri Shepherd. Based on true events, the movie follows a promising athlete with dreams of playing in the NFL when suddenly everything changes as he is falsely accused and convicted of rape. Years later, with the help of the California Innocence Project, he fights to clear his name and fulfill his dream.
Where’d You Go Bernadette? (PG-13)
Appearing in theaters on Aug. 16 is Where’d You Go Bernadette? directed by Richard Linklater and stars Cate Blanchett, Judy Greer, Kristen Wiig, Billy Crudup and Emma Nelson. It is based on the novel of the same name written by Maria Semple. Bernadette (Blanchett) hates many things and has sacrificed herself for the sake of her family. When suddenly she disappears, her daughter, Bee, sets out on a mission to find out where she is and what happened. A delightful mystery comedy.
Angel Has Fallen (NR)
On Aug. 23, Angel Has Fallen shoots into theaters. Directed by Ric Roman Waugh, the film stars Gerard Butler, Morgan Freeman, Piper Perabo and Jada Pinkett Smith. This is the third film that Butler and Freeman are reprising their roles from the Olympus Has Fallen series from 2013 and 2016. This time, Secret Service Agent Mike Banning (Butler) is wrongly accused for the attempted assassination of the president. He must go undercover and evade his own agency and the FBI to prove his innocence and uncover the real threat. Just as action packed as the two films before.
Don’t Let Go (NR)
Finally, on Aug. 30, Don’t Let Go creeps into theaters, directed and written by Jacob Aaron Estes. It stars David Oyelowo, Storm Reid, Byron Mann and Mykelti Williamson. Detective Jack Radcliff’s (Oyelowo) family has seemingly been murdered yet he gets a call from his niece, who was one of the killed, and must decide if he is losing his mind or if he has a chance to save her before it happens. Definitely a great thriller to end the month with.
