A Flushing couple was arrested for alleged reckless endangerment on Tuesday after a 1-year-old boy was found alone inside a locked car parked at a Manhasset shopping center, according to Nassau County Police Department.

Two witnesses saw the infant inside a 2019 Mercedes Benz and noticed he was alone, sweating, and crying. They attempted to open the car doors with no success, then notified authorities. Police responded to the call at around 2:30 p.m.

“Responding officers located the vehicle which was not running and observed the child to be in distress,” a NCPD news release reporting the incident stated. “The infant was crying, red in color and was drenched in sweat.”

When officers arrived, they broke a window and removed the child from the vehicle, then took him into a store to cool him off in air conditioning. The boy was taken to a hospital, from where he is expected to be released.

After an investigation, the couple who allegedly left the infant in the car while shopping for about one hour was found and arrested without incident, police said.

Jingcai Zhou, 34, and Lu Lu, 28, are charged with first-degree reckless endangerment and endangering the welfare of a child. They were set to be arraigned on Wednesday at First District Court in Hempstead.
