Nobody Starves on Long Island Assists Pet Owners and Pets in Need

Nobody Starves on Long Island is one of the most dedicated local 501(c)(3) pet charities that you likely haven’t heard of. Until now.

Displaying the motto “we can feed them all,” Nobody Starves provides a multitude of much-needed assistance to Long Islanders including commercial and prescription pet food distribution, trapping aids to feral cat colony caretakers, financial help for low-income families, and in some cases, rescuing of companion animals in dire situations.

Founder Gary Kaufman always had a passion for helping animals. In 2012 when Superstorm Sandy hit, Kaufman volunteered with the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter to distribute pet food to Long Islanders negatively impacted by the storm. Kaufman would make the drop-offs on his way to and from work as a Long Island Railroad employee. Seeing first-hand how much help people and animals required, Nobody Starves was born.

After purchasing a home in 2016 with nearly two acres of space for dogs to run, Kaufman began rescuing and adopting dogs with special needs, many of which Kaufman pulled from unsafe conditions. His driveway is where you’ll find several sheds containing pet food which is made available for pick-up at no charge, and no questions asked.

Donations come from local shelters and rescues as well as from the public. According to Kaufman, “any type of food is appreciated because we also provide donations to wildlife rehabs, sanctuaries, and farms.  We even accept expired food and opened bags.”

Monetarily speaking, financial donations made to Nobody Starves go to helping pet parents pay for medical care they could otherwise not afford. Kaufman works with both the veterinarian and pet owner to help pick up a percentage of costs when funding is available, making the need for donations crucial.

“I advise people to look into CareCredit, a credit card which offers health and wellness financing. Many veterinarians and hospitals also offer payment plans. When those options have been exhausted, contact Nobody Starves and we will do our very best to provide financial assistance as we can,” says Kaufman.
