The Port Washington Public Library’s Boats by Purdy exhibit is on display in the History Center Annex through Oct. 31. The exhibit features photographs, artifacts and ephemera from the library’s collection of memorabilia from the Purdy Boat Company.
The Purdy Boat Company of Port Washington was one of the most renowned makers od custom yachts and racing boars in the 1920s and 1930s.
Their shop on Manhasset Bay was the birthplace of John Hay Whitney’s famous cruiser, “Aphrodite,” a series of championship-caliber race boats and more than 80 small craft from the U.S. Navy during WWII.
