The Great Neck South Middle School Science Bowl team competed in the 34th annual National Science Bowl competition held in Washington, D.C. from April 24–28. This national academic competition included a field of 48 middle school teams that won their respective regional championship events.
The National Science Bowl included several days of competition and learning activities in the nation’s Capital.
On Saturday, the team competed in a fast-paced science trivia game and placed within the top 16 schools, earning $1,000 for the South Middle School science department. Team members also participated in a drone-flying STEM activity, visited the National Mall and took part in the cyber challenge developed by Lawrence Livermore Labs. In the Cyber challenge, South Middle took fifth place nationally.
Members of the South Middle Science Bowl team who participated in the national competition are Austin Chen, Leeann Lee, Nathan Li, Ryan Tsai and Zale Zhang. The team is coached by science teachers Diane Caplain and Nathan Wong.
The National Science Bowl, sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, is a nationwide academic competition that tests students’ knowledge in all areas of science and mathematics.
