Cobs Bread has closed its doors in Plainview just months after opening and also pulled out of its Carle Place location that was in the works.
The opening of the 353 South Oyster Bay Road store in Plainview in May was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony. Now the site has a sheet of paper taped to the door that reads:“We would like to apologize for any inconvenience, this location is now closed.”

Karen Frost-Spokes, vice president of Cobs Bread USA, said in a statement that the closure of the Plainview location is “part of a broader strategic shift aimed at focusing resources on high-performing areas and ensuring long-term sustainability.”
Frost-Spokes said the company’s stores in Merrick and Oceanside are performing well as are other regional locations in Scarsdale and Connecticut.
In terms of the store that had yet to open, she said the decision reflects Cobs’ commitment to strengthening its foundation and positioning itself for smarter, more sustainable expansion.
A Cobs Bread was expected to open in Carle Place at 215 Glen Cove Road, but the location was canceled before it launched.
Frost-Spokes said the closures do not interfere with Cobs’ mission to expand in the United States.
“We remain committed to the U.S. market and are actively evaluating future expansion opportunities based on performance data and market potential,” she said.
COBS Bread is part of Bakers Delight, an Australian bakery franchise established in 1980. The company has since grown internationally.
COBS bakes all of its breads in-house every day. The bakery uses no added preservatives and donates its leftover supply at the end of each night to local charities. The Plainview location had donated its leftovers to Our Lady of Mercy, Nassau County Chaplain, Social Ministry SMT, Hicksville United Methodist and the Egyptian Orthodox church, Andrew Busch, the location’s manager, said in May.
According to the company’s website, it has kept over $300 million worth of products out of landfills and into the hands of others since 2003.
