Manhasset Public Schools announced that its music department has been awarded the Presidential Citation Award from the New York State School Music Association, the organization’s highest honor. Manhasset was one of only two school districts in New York State to receive the recognition in 2025.
The Presidential Citation Award is highly competitive, with a rigorous evaluation process requiring districts to demonstrate the depth and excellence of their music education programs across all grade levels, from kindergarten through 12th grade. Manhasset’s recognition reflects its comprehensive curriculum, delivered by educators who consistently go above and beyond to support student achievement.
“Our music educators cultivate a culture of excellence through effort,” said Dr. Joseph Owens, director of fine and performing arts. “This award acknowledges not only the visible achievements of our students, such as acceptance into All-County, All-State and national honor ensembles, but also the countless daily moments of dedication in our classrooms that make our program exceptional.”
The award also honors the community’s strong support for the arts in Manhasset. Parents participate in concerts, support rehearsals and assist through the School Community Association to help ensure that all students have access to enriching musical experiences.
NYSSMA, the largest professional organization for music educators in New York State, represents more than 730 public school districts. The Presidential Citation Award will be formally presented at the NYSSMA Winter Conference in Rochester in December.
