A winter storm named Fern brought heavy snow and strong winds to Long Island the weekend of Jan. 24-25, blanketing neighborhoods, slowing traffic to a standstill and prompting school and municipal closures across Nassau and Suffolk counties.

Forecasters said an inch of snow fell every hour, creating hazardous road conditions as plow crews worked through the night to clear major roadways and residential streets. Communities in Nassau County saw up to a foot of snow.
