Relay for Life
The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life will be held at Plainview Middle School, 121 Central Park Rd., at 7 p.m. AN overnight community celebration where groups of friends, families, neighbors and coworkers form teams to walk or run around the school track, to raise spirits, awareness and funds to fight cancer through research, education, advocacy and patient and family services. North Shore Symphony Orchestra to Present
The North Shore Symphony Orchestra will present the fourth concert of its 48th season at 8 p.m. The concert entitled “Summer Celebrations” will feature the winner of NSSO’s Young Artist Award Competition – cellist Lukas Bentel, who will perform Lalo’s Cello Concerto. A resident of Locust Valley, Lukas Bentel is currently studying at The Manhattan School of Music Precollege. A tribute will be made to Dr. Charles Gouse, founder of the North Shore Symphony Orchestra who died in early March 2009. NSSO will perform Brahms Academic Festival Overture and Saint-Saens Danse Bacchanale from Samson and Deliliah, Chadwick Jubilee from Symphonic Sketches and Debussy March ecossaise. Conducted by NSSO’s Music Director and Conductor Susan Deaver, the concert will be held at Plainview-Old Bethpage John F. Kennedy High School, 50 Kennedy Dr., Plainview. Model A Ford Show
Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will host the 37th Annual Model “A” Ford Day from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The event, showcasing more than 60 historic Model A’s, will take place on the Village Fairgrounds, which is a re-creation of the old Mineola Fairgrounds. (In the event that rain forces a cancellation, the event will take place on June 28). The Model A, which replaced the Model T, first appeared on America’s roads in 1927 and production continued in various styles and colors through 1931, when it was replaced by the Model B. The sounds of a late-l9th-century brass band will be re-created by the Old Bethpage Village Brass Band, performing at 2 and 3:15 p.m. Call 72-8400.

Massimo Pigliucci is a professor of ecology and evolution at the SUNY Stony Brook and is known as an outspoken critic of creationism and advocate of science education. His research in science focuses on genotype-environment interactions, on natural selection and on the constraints imposed on the latter by the genetic and developmental makeup of organisms. In the 19th century, a popular form of entertainment involved listening to fiddle tunes and dancing to the calls of the local dance-master. Visitors to Old Bethpage Village Restoration, Round Swamp Rd., Old Bethpage, will be able to enjoy a re-creation of this slice of 19th-century American culture through a performance by the Old Bethpage Village Dancers.
