CCFA Team Challenge Informational Meetings

Team Challenge is the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation’s new endurance training program. This exciting new fundraising program trains you to run or walk a half marathon while helping the foundation raise funds to find a cure for ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. Team Challenge is heading to the inaugural Rock ‘n’ Roll Las Vegas Half Marathon. The ultimate Vegas experience with electrifying, live entertainment. Come to experience a surefire win. Rock n roll with Elvis on this action-packed course down the strip. Do something you never thought you could do while helping 1.4 million people win back their lives. Make a difference, help find cures and run or walk 13.1 miles. Pet-A-Palooza

Blessings, Beach Babies, Toe-Tapping Entertainment at Little Shelter’s Pet-A-Palooza. Break out your dogs swimsuit and beach wear accessories for the Doggie Swimsuit Competition. Prizes will be awarded to the most creative and best dressed canines. At 3 p.m. tap your toes to the sounds of Nicole Oliva as she sings her range of jazz, Broadway tunes and more. From 4 p.m. onwards, enjoy the music of Blue Heron Entertainment. On Aug. 16 you will be entertained by the talents of Paul Presley and Enid Cohen who will be singing their country music repertoire. At 3 p.m. Little Shelter will be transformed as pet lovers celebrate the bond they have with their beloved pets at a Blessing of the Animals service. Pastor Paul Britton of Gloria Dei Evangelical Lutheran Church will give each pet an individual blessing. All furry and feathered friends are welcome. Call 631-368-8770, ext. 205. At the West Hills Day Camp, 21 Sweet Hollow Rd., West Hills, from noon to 7 p.m. The cost is $12 adults; $8 children ages 6 to12; children under 5 are free. It includes food, live music, cash bar, games, raffles and play areas for the kids. The BBQ is being held to raise funds for the neediest children in the Huntington area. Trip to New York Transit Museum

Farmingdale-Bethpage Historical Society is sponsoring a trip to the New York Transit Museum to see the exhibit entitled The Route of the Dashing Commuter: The Long Island Railroad at 175. The NY Transit Museum is housed in the old Court St. station in downtown Brooklyn. The special LIRR display includes historic and contemporary photographs, maps, illustrations and objects on loan and from the museum’s collection that tell the fascinating story of the railroad and how it contributed to the development of Long Island. Registration and travel information is available on the society’s website, www.fbhsli.org.

Art in the Park Event Seeks Local Artists

The Women’s Club of Farmingdale is sponsoring the Second Annual Art Show and Sale on Sept. 12 (rain date Sept. 13) on the Village Green in Farmingdale. Artists are invited to bring their paintings, drawings, photographs and sculptures to show. Ribbons will be awarded for first, second, third place and honorable mention placement. Reservations are available now. Entry fee is $50 (not refundable) for a 10-foot square area. Long Island Masterworks Auditions

The Long Island Masterworks will be auditioning experienced singers for its 20th Anniversary concert in November, featuring music by 20th and 21st century composers, including the world premiere of a new piece commissioned by the Masterworks. American Sign Language Classes

Interested in learning the third most popular language studied in the United States? This fall, Mill Neck Services will offer American Sign Language classes at its new Day Habilitation and Interpreter Services building, 501 S. Broadway, Suite A, Hicksville. Within New York State, many school districts now recognize ASL as a “foreign” language, providing credit towards a Regents diploma. Enroll today in the level 1 adult ASL classes, to be held on Mondays from 6:30 to 9 p.m. from Sept. 14 through Nov. 30. As with other languages, the deaf community, in response to cultural and technological change, is constantly introducing new vocabulary. Register today and become a part of this expanding community. Freeport H.S. Class of 1959 50th Reunion

Member of the Freeport High School Class of 1959 have planned a gala weekend to celebrate their 50-year reunion from Sept.11 to 13. Begins Friday night with a meeting at E.B. Elliot’s on the Nautical Mile to renew old acquaintances. Saturday will find the group at Jones Beach Field 6 or at Museum Row riding Nunley’s Carousel once more, in the bleachers at the Freeport vs. Oceanside football game or just riding around the village visiting old haunts. At 7 p.m. converge at the Freeport Yacht Club for dinner and enjoyment of music of the ‘50s. Before starting home on Sunday, groups will meet at local diners for farewells over brunch. Vendors Wanted

Volunteers Needed

The Mill Neck Family of Organizations is seeking volunteers to work at food sales, children’s activities, apple booths and more during the Fall Harvest Festival to be held on Oct. 10 and 11. The outdoor festival, known as “Apple Sale,” features a wide variety of apples and seasonable produce, craft items, a Cheese House, deaf specialty items and much more. Volunteer support from local civic and church groups, students, alumni, staff, parents and faithful supporters, have made this a special and memorable event. Volunteers can work from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., 12:30 to 5 p.m. or all day. Food tickets will be provided for all volunteers who work four or more hours. This year, the Mill Neck Family will host a “Kick-Off Breakfast for Volunteers” on Oct. 3 from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Deaf Education Center. Open to all 2009 volunteers ages 16 and over, the event will feature a delicious continental breakfast, an orientation and a long-time volunteer recognition ceremony. Have a fond Fall Harvest Memory? •Bingo every Monday and some Saturdays there is a Bingo Game to support the Arthritis Foundation LI Chapter. •Do You Speak Yinglish? The Yiddish Club, an entertaining, enjoyable, social experience, allows individuals of varying language abilities to speak “Yinglish,” a combination of Yiddish and English.
