Adult Art Classes
Due to popular demand, the Recreation Department will again offer an adult pastel class taught by Arleen Ruth Urban. This class is open to adult residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. The class will run from 9 to 11:30 a.m. on Fridays beginning Sept. 18. Our classes will be held in Cluett Hall at St. Paul’s. The cost of the 10-week program will be $105 (supplies are bought on your own- a supply list will be handed out at the first class).
This 10-week program will teach the beginner as well as advanced student the art of painting portraits and landscapes/still-life in pastels from photographs. Students will be given the option of dividing each three-hour session between portrait or landscape or they may concentrate solely on the subject of their choice.
Demonstrations will be available as needed throughout the program. Each student will receive the individual attention required to work at their own pace and level of expertise.
Arleen Ruth Urban, the instructor for this program, is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America. A winner of numerous awards, her commissioned portraits hang in the many Garden City homes.

Adult Yoga Classes
Our fall session of yoga with Connie McKnight will begin the week of Sept. 14 according to the following schedule:
Mondays 7:30 – 8:30 p.m. 13 classes for $65
Wednesdays 10:30 – 11:30 a.m. 12 classes for $60
Thursdays 11:30 a.m.– 12:30 p.m. 13 classes for $65
This program is open to adults who are residents of the Inc. Village of Garden City. Each class will meet in Cluett Hall. The cost of this program is $25 per session.

Adult Tennis Lesson Interest Form Now Available
Fall adult tennis lesson registration has now started. Classes will begin in late September and are played at the Community Park tennis facility.
Our Recreation Department offers lessons for adults in all ability levels. In order to create sessions geared to the needs of our residents, we are asking any adult who is a resident in the Inc. Village of Garden City and is interested in our tennis lessons to fill out an interest form at the Administrative Offices at 108 Rockaway Ave. Please follow the directions listed.
Choose the days and times you are available to play, self rate your tennis ability, either drop off or mail your application to the recreation office at 108 Rockaway Avenue by Sept. 15. Classes will then be made by grouping people of similar abilities according to the dates they are available. Our 10-week, one-hour class will cost $199 and will start in late September.
Children’s Tennis Schedule Announced
The Recreation Department’s Tennis Program for children has set its schedule for the fall. Classes will begin in late September and registration will be by mail only beginning Friday, Sept. 11.
The schedule is being announced for information only to help families plan their children’s after-school activities. Please watch this article for registration instructions and costs at a later date.
Tots (ages 4-5) – this 45-minute class will be introductory and will be offered on Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 3:30 p.m.
PeeWee (ages 6-7) – Also, introductory, these 55-minute classes will be offered at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; at 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday; and at 12:30 or 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays
Novice (ages 6-7) – this 55-minute class is geared toward the child who can already hit the ball over the net with consistency. Serving and the elements of the game will be introduced. Novice classes will be held on Mondays at 5:30 p.m.; Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m.; Wednesdays at 4:30 or 5:30 p.m.; Thursdays at 3:30, 4:30 or 5:30 p.m.; Fridays at 3:30 p.m.; Saturdays at 12:30 or 1:30 p.m.
Junior (ages 8 – 11) – this is a 55-minute beginner class for any child who wants to learn the elements of tennis. Junior Level tennis will be offered at 3:30 p.m. Monday, Wednesday or Thursday; 4:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday; 5:30 p.m. Wednesday or Thursday; 10 a.m., 11:30 a.m. or 1:30 p.m. on Saturdays
Junior Advanced (ages 8-11) – this class is used to challenge the child who can hit and serve the ball and knows the elements of a tennis game. The class is one hour and 25 minutes in length and will be offered at the following times – Mondays, Tuesdays or Wednesdays at 5:30 p.m. and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m.
Senior (ages 12 and up) – Is your child a little older and wants to learn the game of tennis? Then this level is your choice. This 55-minute lesson will teach strokes, serving and the game to the beginner older child. The days and times will be Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursdays at 5:30 p.m., Fridays at 3:30, 4:30 p.m. or 7 p.m. and Saturdays at 12:30 p.m.
Senior Advanced (12 and up) – the child in this class is proficient in tennis and wants to hone their game. The classes will run one hour and 25 minutes and will be held on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday (one hour only) at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11 a.m.
Junior or Senior Ultimate Workout (ages 9 – up) – this class is for experienced players only. The child in this class will be put with drills to sharpen their skills and game. These classes will be held on Fridays from 5:30–7 p.m.
Women’s Platform Tennis at Community Park
Any Garden City resident interested in playing platform tennis for the Long Island Women’s Platform Tennis League should contact Sue Tarzian. Please email Sue at Kanetarzian@aol.com for information. This is a daytime league.
Learn & Play Hockey Camp Program Announced
This eight-week program will begin Sunday, Sept. 13. This program has been designed to introduce the exciting game of roller hockey. No experience is required in hockey or roller skating as this is a beginners program. The cost of the program will be $60 per child, which includes a jersey. Garden City Recreation’s Dance Class Schedule Announced
The Recreation Department’s Dance Conservatory director, Felicia Lovaglio, and her staff have created a program for instructional dance that will create fun while learning for all involved! The schedule below is for information only. Registration and fees will be announced at a later date.
Our Conservatory classes are offered for children ages three-and-a-half through adult. A child must be the appropriate age by the start of the classes in order to attend. Classes will begin in late September and run to April.
